Either you’re a crafts enthusiast or you’re just tired of spending a lot of money on dog toys only for your dog to ruin them after a couple of minutes, making your own dog toys is a great idea!

All you need is imagination, materials you have lying around the house and the will to make your dog happy.

What Never To Use In Making Dog Toys

Just remember, like any toy, human supervision is advised while your dog is playing with the toys.

And you need to make sure to remove the toys from your dog whenever they’ve become too destroyed or frayed to prevent swallowing.

Also, there are materials you don’t want to use while creating toys for your dog.

Like anything that can cut into them (glass, hard plastic, sharp edges, etc.)

Also, you’ll want to avoid tape or if you’re going to use it, make sure it’s really hard to tear away and that you’re supervising at all time.

Swallowing tape that can get stuck to your dog’s stomach or intestines can be a problem.

The same can be said for elastic bands, the best is to avoid them altogether.

Aside from that, your creativity is the limit!

7 DIY Dog Toys You Can Make At Home

Try these 7 easy to make dog toys to keep your dog very happy!

Plastic Water Bottles

Now, this is an essential ingredient to loads of DIY dog toys. Place it inside an old t-shirt or inside a sock.

If you want to add to the fun, place some rice or beans inside for the sound effects. The crackly plastic sound along with the rice will keep your dog interested for hours.

You can also place some tasty treats inside one and hand it over to your dog without the lid.

Tennis Balls

Is your dog a big tennis ball addict?

Does he also rip them open quite quickly? Well, our tip is, use them to place some tasty treats inside.

Tennis balls + treats? Can you imagine how happy your dog will be?

You can also use the hole your dog’s teeth have made and add a new one on the other end. Pass a rope of a t-shirt made braid through it for a DIY toss toy.

Egg Cartons

These are great puzzles for dogs. Egg cartons with treats inside for the dog to find. Or ham, or whatever your dog prefers.

The rules are, your dog needs to open it without ripping it apart. Then he’ll have his prize.

The same can be done with cereal boxes or any type of carton container, the harder it is to open, the most challenging.

Old T-shirts Or Towels

There is so much you can do from an old t-shirt. We’ve already mentioned a couple, but here’s some more.

The simplest way is to just cut three stripes and braid them for the perfect toss toy.

You can also use an old ruined tennis ball, wrap it in an old t-shirt and tie a knot to hold it in place. This means you can toss it further than the braid.

You can make a soft toy!

Cut a top and a bottom side to your toy, fill is with t-shirt scraps or synthetic filling if you want to take it to the next level. Sew the two sides together and it’s ready to be used!

Rope

How many expensive toys can you find at the shop made with rope?

Loads of them, right?

Rope is a great material for dog’s teeth so you can make chew toys in whatever shape you want (rings, knots, straight, your choice!)

Plastic Tubes

Plastic tubes make great dog puzzles. All you need is a tube, the diameter depending on the size of your dog, and a sharp utensil

Make treat sized holes and cover the two ends with some fabric. Hand it over to your dog and watch him role it to get the treats.

Popsicles

Add tasty to fun and you get popsicles.

Icy goodness made with just water, treats, fruit, whatever your dog loves. Just place them in ice cream moulds, ice cube trays, disposable moulds, whatever you have in hand.

Not Into DIY? These Are Our Favorite Dog Toys

If you aren’t particularly excited with the thought of creating your own dog toys and would rather leave it up to the professionals, here is our personal selection of the best dog toys out there.

Our dogs love chew toys, they’re addicted. But this one is particularly good.

For them, because they love its ring shape and the taste and for us is great as well, because the grooves and textures are a great help with keeping the teeth and gums clean.

What dog isn’t obsessed with balls? (Dobby, that’s who! But the others are crazy about them). We’ve lost count of how many balls we’ve purchased only for our dogs to destroy until we found these balls.

They’re resistant, bouncy, colorful and very easy to clean (no more muddy tennis balls, woohoo!)

Plush toys aren’t for every dog. Our dogs prefer to destroy them on sight instead of cuddling with them.

But, for some dogs, plush toys are their favorite toy. They love sleeping with them, cuddling with them or just carry them around everywhere they go.

They’re also good for a game of toss and fetch. These are our favorites.

Nothing says fun times at the park or the beach like playing Frisbee with your dog.

There are a lot of available options, but this one is by far the sturdiest we’ve had.

It also flies the furthest and the rubber is soft enough to make sure dogs can catch it while still in the air without getting hurt.

Conclusion

Toys are a big part of your dog’s life. It’s lovely to see how excited dogs get just by looking at their favorite toy.

Also, toys and play time are really great in creating that special dog/human bond that makes having a dog in our lives so special.

So make them or buy them, your dog won’t care, he’ll love playing with his toys and you and that’s all that matters.
